The use of LEDs has become main-stream for the simple fact that colored filters or the use of multiple inefficient colored lighting sources aren’t needed to produce colors.
LEDs are ideal in applications with frequent on-off cycles, unlike fluorescent lamps that shorten their lifetime when cycled frequently, or HID lamps that require a long time before restarting. On some lighting systems the fixture keeps a constant “lit” stage in order to provide quick on-off, but this is drawing energy while in a standby state.
Looking for a way to educate clients, or yourself, about the benefit of LEDs? The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has a great collection of technology fact sheets on solid-state lighting (SSL) topics. For more information, check out the DOE publication page.
