The Big Dam Bridge
(Edmonton, AB) -- June 07, 2007 -- illumivision Incorporated, a pioneer in the usage of high performance LED-based solutions, today announced the unveiling of one of its largest installations to date, The Murray Lock and Dam, dubbed the “Big Dam Bridge.”
The bridge, which spans the Arkansas River, is 4,226 feet long, with a span over the river totaling 3,463 feet, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers. Billed as the world’s longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge, construction was completed in August 2006. The installation of illumivision’s high performance LED lighting was done months later and only recently revealed to the public.
illumivision was approached to provide a energy efficient RGB lighting solution to the newly created attraction. Approximately 169 Light Wave LX units were supplied and installed over thirteen piers by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The programming and design of the installation was conceived by John Rogers of John Rogers Design Inc. Each unit may be individually programmed to generate millions of colors through the use of the DMX512 protocol. LEDs provide the Big Dam Bridge a cost-effective solution for displaying specific colors for special occasions and seasons through the upcoming years.
The newly illuminated Big Dam Bridge has become a state-wide attraction and visible from multiple vantage points along the Arkansas River. Because illumivision high performance LED solutions are compatible with the industry-standard DMX protocol, the Light Wave LX units integrate seamlessly with a Pharos LPC1 controller, enabling John Rogers Design to create some of the most complex dynamic lighting shows with ease. In addition to the flexible control system, Wireless Solutions provided one wireless transmitter and thirteen wireless receivers for the entire bridge span. Through the use of a wireless solution the installation costs were significantly less than a hard-wire solution providing an almost maintenance free solution for the Pulaski County officials.
